Elmina fort

2006 Elmina, Ghana

Elmina Castle, seen here in 2006, was built by Portuguese traders on Ghana's coast beginning in 1482, making it among the oldest European-built structures in sub-Saharan Africa. It later became a major hub of the Atlantic slave trade.
