1955 Chalchuapa, El Salvador
The Tazumal pyramid rises above the Maya archaeological complex at Chalchuapa, El Salvador, one of the country's most extensively excavated pre-Columbian sites. This 1955 photograph documents the structure decades after early 20th-century excavation work first exposed its stepped terraces.
