A statue of Ulysses S. Grant stands in Bolama, then the capital of Portuguese Guinea, photographed in 1964. The monument commemorates Grant's 1870 arbitration of a territorial dispute between Britain and Portugal, in which he ruled in Portugal's favor over the Bolama archipelago.
