The Ascensor Hospital Van Buren, one of Valparaíso, Chile's historic funicular railways, photographed in 2012. Valparaíso's ascensores were built from the late nineteenth century onward to connect the flat harbor area with the steep hills surrounding it, and several still operate as both transit and tourist attractions.
