Kandy served as the capital of the last independent Sinhalese kingdom before British annexation in 1815 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage city in Sri Lanka's central highlands. It is best known as home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most revered shrines.
