This staircase leads to the former governor's quarters within Elmina Castle, a fort built by Portuguese traders in the fifteenth century and later held by the Dutch, on Ghana's coast. Elmina Castle is among the oldest European-built structures in sub-Saharan Africa. Photographed in 2025.
