The North Gate leading into the walled inner city of Khiva, Uzbekistan, is pictured in 2003. Known as Itchan Kala, the old town's fortifications and gates date largely from the 17th to 19th centuries and were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
