Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress, guarding the western approach to Dubrovnik's old town, photographed in 2009. Built on a 37-metre cliff, the fortress dates largely from the 16th century and once helped defend the independent Republic of Ragusa.
