Galle Fort, built by the Dutch in the 17th century on the foundations of an earlier Portuguese fortification, encloses the old town of Galle on Sri Lanka's southern coast. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its fusion of European architecture and South Asian traditions.
