Galle Fort, seen here in 2012, is a coastal fortification on Sri Lanka's southern coast originally built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. The fort's ramparts and colonial-era streets are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
