Stone Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, recognized for its fusion of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European architectural styles, and lanes like this were laid out centuries ago, long before motor vehicles, and much of their layout survives largely unchanged.
