Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar City, grew as a Swahili trading port where Arab, Persian, Indian and European merchants met for centuries. Its coral-stone buildings, carved wooden doors and narrow lanes earned the district UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000.
