Lima's cathedral stands on the city's Plaza Mayor, the historic heart of the Peruvian capital laid out by Francisco Pizarro in 1535. First built in the sixteenth century and rebuilt after repeated earthquakes, the cathedral remains the seat of the Archdiocese of Lima.
