Terraced rice paddies climb the hillsides around Sa Pa, a hill town in northern Vietnam close to the Chinese border. Farmers in this region, largely from Hmong and Dao ethnic groups, have long carved these stepped fields into steep terrain to make it suitable for wet-rice cultivation.
