This 2010 photograph shows the archaeological remains of the ancient Roman city of Serdica, uncovered beneath Sofia, Bulgaria's Serdika metro station. Rome took the settlement around 29 BC, and it flourished as Ulpia Serdica from the 1st to 4th centuries AD, with city walls dating to the reign of Trajan.
