Higashi Hongan-ji, one of Kyoto's largest Buddhist temple complexes, photographed in 1913. Its massive wooden halls, rebuilt in the late nineteenth century after a series of fires, made it a frequent stop for early twentieth-century travelers to the former imperial capital.
