EU: Buddha Statuen, Sanjusangendo Tempel, Kyoto (1893)

1893 Kyoto, Japan

The Sanjusangendo temple in Kyoto houses more than a thousand life-sized statues of the Buddhist deity Kannon, arranged in tiered rows along its long wooden hall. This 1893 photograph records a portion of that statuary, a devotional collection assembled over centuries and among the temple's best-known features.
