A cavalier, or raised gun platform, at Galle Fort in Galle, Sri Lanka, photographed in 2008. The fort was originally built by the Portuguese and substantially fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century, and it survives as one of the best-preserved colonial forts in South Asia.
