Kiyomizu-dera, a Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture; September

Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage juts from the hillside of eastern Kyoto in this photograph from September 2008. Founded in the eighth century, the Buddhist temple is built without the use of nails and is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO listing.
