1866 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

This 1866 photograph of Saigon was taken by John Thomson, whose travels through Cochin China, Cambodia, and China in the 1860s produced some of the first extensive photographic documentation of the region, later preserved in the Wellcome Collection's archives.
