1870 Kyoto, Japan

Gion street in Kyoto is shown in 1870, in the district long associated with teahouses and traditional entertainment near the city's Higashiyama temples. Gion developed around the approach to Yasaka Shrine and remained a center of Kyoto's traditional culture into the Meiji era.
