Originally built by the Dutch West India Company in 1649 as Fort Crèvecœur, this Accra stronghold was ceded to Britain under an 1867 treaty and renamed Ussher Fort after a British colonial administrator. It was later used as a prison before its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979.

Ussher Fort 18 2023 This fortification began as a Dutch trading post in 1649, expanded from an earlier factory built in 1642, and stood alongside other European forts on Ghana's coast during the era of the transatlantic slave trade. Transferred to British control in 1868, it was renamed Ussher Fort.
