Higashi Hongan-ji, one of Kyoto's largest Buddhist temple complexes, photographed in 1913. Founded in the early seventeenth century as the head temple of the Higashi Hongan-ji branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, it remained a major pilgrimage site well into the twentieth century.
